Why do we Consider Shridevi as our Greatest Divine Mother?

Omnipotent Goddess Shridevi Durga: The Supreme Mother of the Universe

Introduction: Mother and her Caring Nature

Mother does not need any introduction. Isn’t right? But the topic does.  :-)

In India, we have a great respect for our mother. She gives birth to us and protects us before and after we are born. When we were kids, we were totally dependent on her.  Literally for everything – food, shelter and all other necessities.

Even today, when in danger or pain, we cry out “O, mother!”. Involuntarily, we call her in our respective languages for help. We ought to respect her with gratitude for all that she had done to us. Our Upanishads command us to adore our mother as divine:

Matr devoo bhava | – Shiksha Valli, Taittiriya Upanishat
Meaning: Treat your mother as God.

Usually, relation-wise,  all of us are closer to our mother than the father. Reason is plain and simple! We know: mother is generally more considerate and accommodative in giving/getting us whatever we want!

Fine. Let us come back to the topic of discussion now.

Shridevi, as the Divine Mother

Shridevi is worshiped as Mother Goddess in India. In the South, She is called Amma and whereas in the North, She is addressed as Maa. Both of these words mean the same  – “Mother”.  Esoteric Scripture Lalita Sahasranama starts with addressing Shridevi as Mother! Thus:

Shrimaata Shrimaharajni ….. |

Meaning: Divine Mother, Divine queen, …..

Now, our fundamental question:

Why should we consider Shridevi as our Divine Mother?

Although, the question is simple, answer can be quite complex. As always, we will try to explain it in an easier way, avoiding  greater depths.

The Scripture Devi Mahatmya in Tantrokta Devi Sukta says:

Ya Devi sarvabhooteshu matr roopena samsthitaa |
Namastsyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah ||

It Means: We salute Devi Durga, who is present as motherly nature(i.e. caring) in every being. We salute Her, We salute Her and We Salute Her!

In other words, the caring motherly nature in all of us is nothing but Shridevi Durga. So, we call that affectionate and caring nature in us as our Mother Shridevi.

Our Shaivate Scripture, Shiva Sutras provides another authoritative perspective:

Jnanaadhistanam Matrika | – Shiva Sutras 1.4

Meaning: It is un-understood Mother, or power of sound inherent in the alphabet is the basis of our limited knowledge.

So, nicely said. What is the limited knowledge? Our understanding and feeling of: we are different from the Universal Self. This sense of difference is called ignorance or limited knowledge.

The inherent power present in the alphabet or words  creates our world. Who is that power? That is none other than Shridevi ! So, she is the Mother of our world. That is why She is also called Jagajjanani (Mother of the Universe). Just ponder: very concept of world comes to us from words!

Shridevi is also called Vak (speech). In his famous vagarthaviva sloka  of Raghuvamsha, Greatest Poet Kalidasa says: “I pray parents of the world, Parvati and Parameshwara who are always together like speech and its meaning, to know the speech an its meaning” What a great statement indeed! Notice that, here also, Shridevi(Parvati) is referred as Mother.

The feeling of difference (duality,two-ness, the other, etc.) is nothing but maya (illusion). Shridevi – present as Mother power in words – brings the  illusion of difference. Therefore, she is also called Devi Mahamaya (Goddess of Great illusion).

As Mahamaya, Shridevi creates our body, psychic chakras and entire psycho-somatic system and finally, rests in Muladhara  as Shri Kundalini Devi. So, She is the Mother who is responsible for our creation.

Sorry, I did not get it. It is becoming very abstract. How can you say -  the world is created by words? What about physically challenged such as dumb who cannot speak a word?

Just think about it. Why do you have a name? To distinguish yourself from other people. Right? To give you an identity of your own for yourself.  The name or a word is a label to understand the things as separate.   If you do not have words to distinguish, everything becomes the same and reduces to that One Truth (Brahman, Universal Self)! as  our Scriptures Upanishads say:

Sarvam khalvidam Brahma |
Means: Everything is Brahman.

Even the physically challenged like dumb, distinguish different things by words internally. Words serve as mandatory labels for everybody to differentiate things.

Thus, the important message is:  the word creates our world!

Words are very potent too. Whenever power of words is discussed, we remember mantras. Mantras are potent phrases used for various purposes in Sanatana Dharma(a.k.a Hinduism).  Now, a related question:

From where does the power come to mantras? Is there a link between Shridevi and mantras?

Of course! In short, Shridevi herself is the power of mantras! She is present as un-understood Mother power of words(matrika shakti) in mantras. This is the secret of mantras.  We can unlock the power and understand the mantras, by following prescribed methods as per tradition and Scriptures under the supervision of a Realized Master.

How do other attributes of a mother apply to Shridevi?

Good question. As we  discussed earlier, Shridevi creates us as Mahamaya As Matrika, i.e. maternal power of words, She also creates our world through words.  Thus, She plays the role of the creator.

She protects and controls everything in our body as Supreme Mother Kundalini. So, She is also our sustainer.

When she is awakened, She helps us to achieve the real  goal of  yoga and human life, i.e.  to merge our Individual Self with Universal Self. Thus, She also as protects us from infinite birth and death cycle by giving her divine abode  as Mahadevi. This is due to her power of dissolution.

So, Shridevi performs the functions of creation, sustenance and dissolution of Hindu Trinity Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva. Just like mother, She is affectionate and caring too. Whenever we pray her, She is here to help us in any danger. As mentioned in the Scripture Devi Mahatmya:

Durge smrita harasi bheetim-ashesha jantooh | – Saptashloki Durga, Sloka #2
Meaning: (Durge Devi!) In any danger, if you are prayed, you destroy fear of every beings.

Thus, Shridevi as the creator, gives birth to us. As Matrika power, She lives in the words to create our world. As the sustainer, She helps us to live. As the destroyer, She eliminates ignorance and gives us Her divine ultimate refuge. She is there to protect us whenever we pray her for help.  So, Shridevi has all the attributes of a Super Mother, i.e. Shrimata. So, we adore Her as our compassionate divine Mother calling her as Mother, Amma, Maa etc.

If we surrender to Shridevi and pray with devotion, She takes care of everything for us. As our Great Master, Shri Shankara Bhagavatpadah puts it:

… Param jaane matah tvadanusaranam klesha haranam | – Devyaparadha Kshamapana Stotra, Sloka #1
Meaning: Mother(Shridevi!, I do not know how to worship you properly…), But, I know one thing: surrendering to you destroys difficulties and pain.

Could you please tell me the bottom line of the entire discussion?

Omnipotent Mother Shridevi resides in alphabet and words as Matrika power.  She is responsible for creation, sustenance and dissolution of ourselves and the world. So, She is the Greatest Divine Mother. Since She is the mother- by her very nature – She is very compassionate and caring.

If we pray Her with devotion, by definition of the word Shridevi, She will surely bestow us with whatever we want- including  material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation from life and death cycle (moksha).

OK. What is the action item from the discussion?

Taam aadi shaktim pranatah sma nityam |
Let us pray that primordial power(Shridevi) always (for her kind Grace)!

Shh! Very Personal Question: Is Lord Ganesha Married?

Lord Ganesha with Buddhi and Siddhi

Lord Ganesha with His Consorts Buddhi and Siddhi (Source: Google)

Folks,

Hari Om! Namaste!!

It is our privilege to discuss on our friend and favorite deity Lord Ganesha! As we have understood, he is very special in many ways.

He is always worshiped first. He is the remover of obstacles. He occupies strategic chakra muladhara in our psychic system to bestow us both material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha).  His turning of the trunk also symbolizes it. Anything more know? Yes! Here is somewhat personal question on Lord Ganesha:  :)

Is Lord Ganesha Married? If yes, who is his consort !?

It helps to be aware that this topic is slightly controversial. The marital status and names of his wives varies  greatly from place to place.

In India, in some areas people believe that Lord Ganesha is unmarried. In some other places, the Lord is considered to be a married deity with wives Buddhi and Siddhi.  Some others believe that Lord Ganesha is married and his wives are Riddhi and Siddhi.   It is all very confusing. Then, which one is correct?

We need to go back to our Scriptures for an authoritative answer. According to Scriptures Ganesha Purana and Mudgala Purana, Lord Ganesha is married to Buddhi and Siddhi, daughters of Lord Brahma. Period. No need for any further evidence.

What does it really mean? Buddhi  means intelligence. Siddhi is the ultimate achievement, i.e. liberation(moksha). Riddhi  means progress, prosperity and material enjoyment(bhoga). Buddhi, Siddhi and Riddhi are all Lord Ganesha’s  own powers. When they are personified, they are considered as his consorts.

How can you say that – “powers of the deities are their consorts”?

Just think about it. It is well known that Lord Shiva’s power is Shridevi Parvati. In other words, Lord Shiva’s dynamic power is nothing but his wife, Shridevi Parvati. Similarly with other deities too. e.g. Lord Vishnu’s dynamic power is none other than consort Shri Lakshmi Devi. Thus, Lord Ganesha’s wives  Buddhi, Riddhi and Siddhi  are his personified dynamic powers. Got it?

What is the secret meaning of Lord Ganesha and his consorts?

The presiding deities of intelligence(Buddhi), prosperity(Riddhi) and liberation(moksha or Siddhi) are Shri Saraswati Devi, Shri Lakshmi Devi and Shridevi Parvati. So, it suggests that Lord Ganesha has the power of all of these three deities. OK. Is there an evidence from our Scriptures?

Of course, yes! Let us look at our Scripture Ganapati Upanishat. It says:

Twam Shakti trayatmakah | – Ganapati Upanishat

Meaning: (Lord Ganesha!) You are the embodiment of three powers.

What are those three powers of Lord Ganesha?

Jnana(knowledge), Iccha(desire), and Kriya(action) are the fundamental universal powers. They are ruled by Shri Saraswati Devi, Shri Lakshmi Devi and Shridevi Parvati respectively.  They correspond to Lord Ganesha’s powers Buddhi, Riddhi and Siddhi respectively as discussed above.

I am an executive in a hurry(need to run for meeting! ;-) ). What is the take home from the entire discussion?

Yes! It is officially confirmed and declared: Lord Ganesha is married! He has two consorts Buddhi and Siddhi. Lord Ganesha’s wives are nothing but his dynamic powers.

He is also the embodiment of three fundamental powers Buddhi(intelligence), Riddhi(prosperity) and Siddhi(liberation). If we pray Lord Ganesha with devotion, he will definitely  bestow us knowledge, material enjoyment and liberation. All covered! Can we ask anything more?

What are we waiting for? Let us pray Lord Ganesha:

Parabrahma roopam Ganesham bhajema |

Let us pray Lord Ganesha who is the Supreme Brahman (for his Grace) .

Meaning: Shridevi! The dust of your lotus feet is:
Island city of the Suns removing the darkness of ignorant[1],
Cluster of flowers from which gushes the nectar of intelligence for the dull-witted[2],
Necklace of wish yielding gems for the poor[3].
It becomes tusk of cosmic boar(varaha, incarnate of Lord Vishnu)[4] uplifting the people immerse in the ocean of samsara(infinite birth and death cycle) !

Our Insights: Look at the power of dust of Shridevi’s feet!

  1. The dust of Shridevi’s lotus feet  are brilliant Suns for people in darkness of ignorance. They remove ignorance by dazzling spiritual illumination like Suns of knowledge.  Shridevi is present in everybody as Mother Kundalini. When awakened by Grace of a Realized Master, She gives the Highest Knowledge and liberation(moksha). This removal of ignorance can happen even by a speck of dust of Shridevi’s lotus feet. The dust bestows so much powerful Grace that it completely eliminates ignorance at once! So, it has a revolutionary effect. Hats off to Her power!
    .
  2. The dust of Shridevi’s feet is like nectar of wit coming out of cluster of flowers. It provides extraordinary intelligence for a dull person. It may be recalled that Great Sanskrit Poet Kalidasa was a foolish person by birth. According to his story, Shridevi’s Grace made him the greatest poet. Similar Grace can be easily obtained simply by the dust of Shridevi’s lotus feet!
    .
  3. The dust of Shridevi’s feet is like Chintamani (wish-fulfilling gem)  capable of providing anything and everything to her devotees. Chinatamani is a divine gem. If we hold it and wish for anything, we get it immediately. So, the dust from lotus feet of Shridevi fulfills each and every wish of Her votaries making them prosperous and wealthy, akin to Chintamani.
    .
  4. The dust of Shridevi’s feet are like the tusk of Varaha(cosmic boar) incarnate of Lord Vishnu. The tusks of Varaha were so powerful to lift the entire Earth from the ocean. Likewise, dust from Shridevi’s lotus feet are extremely strong to uplift the people who are deeply immersed the ocean of continuous life and death cycle. Thus,  the dust of Shridevi’s lotus feet helps her devotees to  transform themselves to merge with the Ultimate Reality, which is again Shridevi Herself!
    .
According to Scriptures Puranas, once the Earth got immersed in a deep ocean at the time of  dissolution(pralaya). Lord Vishnu incarnated into a wild boar(Varaha) and brought the Earth up  on his pair of huge tusks.
    .
  5. The Most Esoteric Meaning:
This shloka describes different powers of dust of lotus feet of Shridevi. It offers knowledge to make the person brilliant. This is the power of Shri Saraswati Devi, who is the ruler of knowledge.
It bestows prosperity and wealth like Chintamani. This is Shri Lakshmi aspect of Shridevi, who is the ruler of prosperity.
It graces the person like brilliant Sun to erase the ignorance. It is also capable of lifting the devotee out of birth and death cycle. This is the power of Parvati who is the ruler of liberation.  The speck of dust itself is as powerful as these three deities!
    .
In essence, the dust of lotus feet of Shridevi does the work of three great powers, viz.  Shri Saraswati Devi, Shri Lakshmi Devi and Shri Parvati Devi. Thus, it provides knowledge, prosperity and liberation to Shridevi’s devotees! What else do we need?
If the dust itself is so potent, then, what could be the power of Shridevi? Can’t even think! It is infinite and immeasurable! Remember that Shridevi’s another name itself is Shakti(power)!  It is all astounding, Right?

Words of Beauty: Notice these group of homo-phonic words that provide a nice melodious rhythm: timira-mihira, nagari-shrutijhari, mani-gunanika, muraripu-varaha. Relish and enjoy!

Welcome aboard and all the best. Enjoy reading. Have fun!

Usual Meaning of  Soundarya Lahari

In Sanskrit, the word Soundarya means beauty and Lahari means wave. So, the word Soundarya Lahari literally means wave of beauty. Since the hymn is addressed to Shridevi Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari, it means wave of beauty of Shridevi. Accordingly, in the hymn Shridevi’s celestial beauty has been described from top to bottom.

There are multiple shades of meaning too, just like Vagarthaviva verse of great poet Shri Kalidasa. Let us try to understand them.

Esoteric Meanings of  Soundarya Lahari

Perspective #1: In Sanskrit, the word Sundari means a any lady with soundarya, meaning beauty, great attributes.  In this context, it means divine powers. Therefore, Soundarya Lahari means wave of supreme powers of Shridevi Lalita Mahatripura Sundari.

Perspective #2: Here is another angle to the meaning. Sundari refers specifically to Shridevi Lalita Tripura Sundari. Soundarya means attributes or the great powers of Sundari. So, again, Soundrya Lahari means wave of great powers of Shridevi.

Perspective #3: The word Soundarya means beauty and Lahari means powerful wave. Together, Soundarya Lahari means powerful wave of beauty of Shridevi. This meaning clearly suggests that each shloka of Soundarya Lahari is a very powerful wave of Shridevi’s extraordinary powers!  Therefore, by definition, the hymn is  extremely energetic.

Perspective #4: The word Soundarya means beauty which suggests fundamental aspect, desire(Iccha). Lahari is powerful wave that implies the primordial aspect, dynamism or action(kriya). The ruling deities of these two aspects Iccha and Kriya  are  Shri Lakshmi and Shridevi Parvati respectively.
.
What about the third fundamental aspect Jnana(Knowledge) ruled by Shridevi Saraswati? The powerful words of Soundarya Lahari are themselves that! This means Soundarya Lahari hymn deals with all three fundamental powers of Shridevi Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari.

Perspective #5: The word Soundarya implies luxury or great asset. So, it is representative of ruler of luxuries, i.e. Shridevi Lakshmi. Lahari means great force, which is indicative of Shakti(power) which is nothing but Shridevi Parvati.
Therefore, Soundarya Lahari incorporates the aspects of Shri Lakshmi and Shri Parvati.  These two deities viz. Shri Lakshmi and Shridevi Parvati are also the rulers of material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha) respectively. This means that Soundarya Lahari has the intrinsic power to bestow prosperity and liberation to its devotees and practitioners.

Perspective #6: The hymn Soundarya Lahari is the embodiment of Shridevi herself. The word Soundarya is equivalent to Shri, i.e. Shri Lakshmi and Lahari is suggestive of Devi Parvati. So,  Soundarya Lahari refers Shridevi Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari.

Perspective #7: Soundarya(beauty) is the static aspect of Universal Self, which is Lord Shiva. Lahari relates to the Shakti(Force) which is the dynamic attribute of Lord Shiva, i.e. Shridevi. So, Soundarya Lahari deals with the intricate oneness of Lord Shiva and Sridevi Parvati. The first shloka of Soundarya Lahari  itself is an example and testimony for this perspective.

Perspective #8: Now, let us think from another dimension about the word Soundarya Lahari. In simple terms, Soundarya means beauty, which is extrinsic pleasing aspect of Shridevi. Lahari means powerful wave, which is the intrinsic power characteristic of Shridevi. Together these two words describe Shridevi and also the hymn. In other words, both Shridevi and the hymn both are beautiful and powerful!

Beauty is more extrinsic,  i.e. we can see through our senses e.g. eyes and grasp by our mind. In the second part of Soundarya Lahari(i.e. verses 42-100), the focus is on this extrinsic celestial beauty of Shridevi.

The power of Shridevi is intrinsic aspect of Shridevi. It pertains to her special powers which  are very subtle and transcendental in nature.  So, we cannot easily grasp them by our limited mind and body machinery. However, it can be experienced with through spiritual practices under the supervision of a Master. This aspect of Shridevi is emphasized in the Ananda Lahari (i.e. first 41 verses) part of Soundarya Lahari.

Thus, the name Soundarya Lahari refers to the confluence of both extrinsic divine beauty and intrinsic powers of Shridevi.  In a nutshell, it  is a hymn that unleashes Shridevi’s divine grandeur completely and comprehensively by covering both great intrinsic powers and extrinsic aesthetic aspects.

Now, if we apply this concept of beauty and power to the hymn itself, then the hymn must be extrinsically beautiful and intrinsically powerful. Right? Indeed it is a fact! Since the beauty is extrinsic, we can easily appreciate it if we read the verses and ponder on the meaning.

How about the aspect of Shridevi’s power? It is intrinsic and inherent in the words. In other words, the verses themselves are powerful mantras.  The power cannot be understood just like that. It needs a proper initiation from an adept Master who knows the tradition of Shrividya way of worship of Shridevi.

Here is an  interesting thought-provoking question:

Are these intrinsic powers and extrinsic beauty aspects of Shridevi implemented in Soundarya Lahari itself? If yes, how?

Yes, of course! Both intrinsic powers and extrinsic divine beauty aspects of Shridevi have been carefully blended within the hymn.

Appropriate words that are packed with energy are strategically used in the hymn to infuse infinite intrinsic power in each verse.  So,  it has become an extremely important  mantra in rituals and spiritual practices in Shrividya tradition of Shridevi’s worship.

Moreover, each verse of the hymn is loaded with beautiful homo-phonic pleasing words and literary decorations(alankaras) to stress the extrinsic celestial beauty of Shridevi.  So, from the literary perspective, it occupies a special summit in Sanskrit literature.  Moreover, it became one of the greatest jewels among stotras too.

What is the secret hidden message from the above analysis of Shridevi’s supreme beauty  in the context of the hymn?

It clearly suggests that:

The great hymn Soundarya Lahari is the embodiment of Shridevi herself, who is immensely powerful and beautiful.  Period. In other words, Soundarya Lahari  hymn is  nothing but beautiful Shridevi with all great powers!

This is a great insight, indeed. Do we have more support for it?

Why not? As we discussed earlier, first 41 shlokas of Soundarya Lahari emphasize the power aspect of Shridevi. Since the power is more amenable to experience, these verses are called Ananda Lahari, i.e. wave of bliss. So, these verses are nothing but the great powers of Shridevi in a form of a poem.

The next part of Soundarya Lahari stresses the beauty aspect of Shridevi. In these shlokas, Shri Shankara Bhagavatpada describes the beauty of Shridevi from Her head to toe. So, these verses represent these parts of Shridevi’s divine form.

From this discussion, it is crystal clear that:

Soundarya Lahari  is a hymn form  of Shridevi Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari !

This is why this hymn is so important, mystical, esoteric and unique among all the hymns. So, understanding the profound meanings of Soundarya Lahari is same as knowing ever-enchanting Shridevi herself. Got it?

Here is another very intriguing question:

Although, the hymn consists of two parts, viz. Ananda Lahari and Soundrya Lahari, why do we call the entire hymn as Soundarya Lahari?

Ananda means experience of bliss. The word is related Shridevi’s power, which can be experienced as pure bliss. It is an intrinsic faculty of Shridevi. Now, the word Lahari also relates to the power of Shridevi. So, the entire hymn cannot be called Ananda Lahari, because extrinsic aspect of Shridevi, i.e. beauty is not considered. Thus, this term cannot adequately describe the hymn.

On the other hand, the name Soundarya Lahari comprehensively describes the hymn. Soundarya is beauty, an extrinsic aspect of Shridevi. As discussed above, this term Soundarya Lahari implies several pairs of  aspects of Shridevi and the hymn itself,  in one go. Thus, it covers:

  1. Beauty and power
  2. Desire and action
  3. Shri Lakshmi and Shridevi Parvati
  4. Material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha)
  5. Material life and spirituality
  6. Literary beauty and power of mantra.

This is just extraordinary! Par excellence! Magic and power of Sanskrit words!!

If you are still reading, :) we hope you discovered the mystical  power of words and their meaning(Vagartha) throughout the journey of this article.  Remember, every word is a seed that has a potential to grow into a Big Banyan tree of meanings!  Is it clear now?

* About the picture: This picture is very special in many esoteric ways:
Perspective #1: Shridevi riding on tiger together represent beauty(Soundarya) aspect of Shridevi. The waves(Lahari) in the background represent power of Shridevi. The picture adequately describes both Soundarya Lahari and Shridevi very meaningfully.

Perspective #2: Shridevi’s form represents beauty. The tiger represents power.

Perspective #3: The wave means two things: 1. waves of water in the background representing power. 2. waving means making gestures. It refers to Shridevi’s hand gesture of Abhaya (“Don’t fear!” gesture) the picture.

Note: It is our great fortune to discuss the glory of Shridevi. It is only because of Her kind Grace and command, we could have these esoteric insights and share them with you. So, as mark of gratitude and devotion, let us pray Shridevi  to shower Her affectionate Grace on all of us.

Supremely  Beautiful in All Three Worlds:  Shridevi Lalita Mahatripura Sundari

Twadanyah paanibhyam abhaya-varado daivataganah
Twam Ekaa naivasi prakatita-varaabhityabhinaya |
Bhayat tratum datum phalam api cha vancha samadhikam
Sharanye lokanam tava hi charanaveva nipunau ||
- Soundarya Lahari 4

Benefits: Removal of all Fears and Curing of Diseases.

Meaning:
Shridevi ! All deities except you bestow boons and provide shelter from fear by varada and abhaya gestures. (Because)
O, refuge of all! your lotus feet themselves are capable of fulfilling all desires and protect from fears!

Insights:

  1. This splendid shloka unveils unmatched power of Shridevi’s feet when compared to other deities. All deities need their hands and gesture to give boons and to protect. But, Shridevi does not require them. Why? Her lotus feet themselves are immensely capable to bestow boons and to give refuge! As discussed earlier, the gestures varada and abhaya provide material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha) from endless birth and death cycle.
    ..
.According to this verse, Shridevi’s lotus feet themselves do the function of varada-abhaya gestures. So, they bestow us both material prosperity and liberation. What more to expect anyway?
    .
So, the message of this shloka extremely clear:  we need to pray Shridevi and take the refuge at her lotus feet to have a prosperous life during our existence on the Earth and to get liberation afterwords.
    .
  2. Esoteric Meaning of Twam Ekaa: Look at the phrase Twam Ekaa meaning you are the only One. It shows the uniqueness of Shridevi. She is the Adishakti, i.e. ultimate primordial force. Nobody else can be like her. The word Ekaa meaning One confirms that Shridevi herself is the only One Ultimate Reality or Brahman.
    .
Who is the Brahman after all? The answer is: Brahman is nothing but Twam, i.e. real you, the Individual Self. Nobody else!  This is the clear message of our Upanishats. The word Ekaa refers to Shridevi, who is the only One, i.e. Universal Self. Now if you connect these two words, meaning becomes: 1. Real you is nothing but Shridevi. 2. Shridevi is that One Supreme Brahman or Universal Self. 3. Individual Self (Twam, you) is the Universal Self(Ekaa, i.e. Shridevi).
    .
Thus, this important phrase  intrinsically conveys the non-dual philosophy of our Great Universal Master Shri Shankara Bhagavatpadah. It says: Individual Self is nothing but the Universal Self. In other words, real you within you is same as God. What a profound message!
    .
  3. The phrase Sharanye lokanam means refuge of allincluding all the deities too. The deities which show different gestures by their hands themselves take refuge of Shridevi’s lotus feet! In other words, Shridevi’s lotus feet themselves are able to dispel fear and to give boons for everybody including other Gods.
    .
  4. Let us analyze the phrase: Bhayat tratum, means to protect from fear. What do we need to be afraid of? It is the fear of being in the infinite and endless birth and death cycle. Who has the power to protect or liberate from it? The lotus feet of Shridevi Lalita Tripura Sundari!  So, the lotus feet of Shridevi gives us liberation. In essence, this phrase indicates the Shridevi Parvati who is in-charge of liberation(moksha).
    .
  5. Consider this portion of the verse: datum phalam api cha vanchasam-adhikam, meaning – to give the fruit and (to fulfill) desire in abundance. Ponder on the words phalam(fruit), vanchasam(desire) and adhikam (means abundance, plenty, prosperity etc.).
    .
What does it suggest? who is the ruler of abundance and primary force, desire(Ichha)? It is none other than Shri Lakshmi! So, this phrase in the shloka says Shri Lakshmi’s power is present in the lotus feet of Shridevi which bestows material prosperity to the devotees.
    .
  6.  Now, let us take a moment to listen to what the Scripture Durga Saptashati says:
    .
    Daaridrya-dukha-bhaya-haarini kaa twat anyaa |
Meaning: (Shridevi!) Who else can eliminate poverty, sorrow and fear, except you?
    .
It essentially states: Shridevi Durga eliminates poverty by gracing the devotees with prosperity by her Shri Lakshmi aspect. She also dispels sorrow and fear, by her aspect of Shridevi Parvati. The word except you in the verse excludes other deities. As discussed earlier, other deities themselves pray Mother Shridevi for her kind Grace.
    .
It nicely echoes the discussion on points 4 and 5 above. But there is a contrast.
    .
Durga Saptashati verse quoted here says Shridevi bestows prosperity and refuge to her votaries. But, the verse of Soundarya Lahari proclaims that Shridevi’s lotus feet themselves are capable of doing it!
    .
What is the take home from the above two different views?
    .
Message is very simple and clear: Shridevi as a whole has infinite power! Hence, She is also called Shakti(power) and Mahadevi(Great Goddess).

If you are our vigilant reader, you may ask a question now:

In an earlier article it was mentioned that Shridevi assumes varada – abhaya gestures. This verse apparently contradicts it. What is the reality?

There is absolutely no contradiction whatsoever. We need to understand this verse from the correct perspective. That’s all.
.
This particular shloka is addressed to Shri Lalita Mahatripura Sundari(meaning most beautiful Devi in three worlds) form of Shridevi. Hence the name of the hymn is Soundarya Lahari, i.e. wave of beauty.

In Shri Tripura Sundari form, She has four hands holding goad, noose, sugarcane bow and bunch of five flower arrows in right back, left back, left front and right front hands respectively (refer to the picture above). She does not show any gesture!

So, the current shloka refers to this Tripurasundari form only. In this form, the lotus feet of Shridevi Lalita itself provide everything, rendering the gestures superfluous! However, it must be noted that Shridevi does show varada – abhaya gestures in many of her other forms.  Got it clear?

Did you enjoy reading this article? Are you a devotee of Greatest Mother Shridevi Durga?

If so, you may be interested in knowing more about the beauty and power of Shridevi by reading other articles on Soundarya Lahari in a category here.

Words of Beauty: Here are the bunch of words that provide a nice melodious rhythm to the verse: tratum-datum; sharanye-charanaveva. Relish and Enjoy!

Let us pray and take refuge in the lotus feet of  Great Mother Shridevi !

Great Master Shri Sujnan Giri Explains: What are the Vedas? Part – 1

Picture of Mother Shridevi Gayathri

The Mother of the Vedas: Supreme Deity Shridevi Gayathri

Folks,

Hari Om! Namaste!!

We had many references to the Vedas in many of our articles. The Vedas are the most fundamental Scriptures of Sanatana Dharma(a.k.a Hinduism). Our Great Master Shri Shankara Bhagavatpadah commands us-Vedo Nityam adheeyatam”, i.e. study and practice the Vedas daily. So, it is important to know about the Vedas clearly.

But, how? It is very simple! Through a reality fiction in which great truths are packaged in a beautiful story. In this article, our Great realized Master Shri Sujnan Giri explains about the Vedas to Jnana Hariputra. OK. Let us listen to their discussion attentively. Are you ready?

Convinced by the last discussion on worshiping several Gods in Hinduism, Jnana Hariputra again approaches Shri Sujnan Giri to get the authoritative answers for his questions.

Hariputra: “Namaste, Bhagawan! I have some intriguing questions on the Holy Vedas. May I request you to Grace your kind answers, Sir?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Namaste, Jnana! Sure. Go ahead!”

Hariputra: “What are the Holy Vedas?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: ” The word Veda comes from the Sanskrit root Vida Jnane meaning to know. So, Veda means the Knowledge. They are the eternal Truths. They are the sound form of the Absolute.”

Hariputra: “Sir, Could you please elaborate on sound form of the Absolute?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Fine. The Vedas consist of mantras. The mantras are powerful phrases usually set as a poem in a particular metre. Since they are sounds and are heard, they are also called Shrutis(those which are heard). These eternal mantras were revealed to our highly enlightened sages(Rishis) in deep meditation. The Rishi who first experienced the mantra is called the Seer (Rishi) of that mantra. ”

Hariputra: “Sir, you said the Vedic mantras are heard. But, you also mentioned about Seer of the mantra. I am confused. Whether mantras were heard or seen?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Both or neither! The Vedic mantras were experienced in deep meditation. In a deep state of meditation, only one sense like ear or eye may not be able to provide the complete picture of the total experience of the mantra. So, both would give a snapshot of the experience to provide a complete understanding of the mantra.
Since meditational experience is something beyond the senses like ear or eye, whatever reported by the senses may not give the accurate picture of the experience.
Hence, the Seer  is an approximate conventional term for the Great Master who is the first to experience the mantra. Got it?”

Hariputra: “Sir, this is becoming abstract for me. I am unable to understand. Could you please illustrate this with some analogy?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Sure. Let us take an example of a movie. When you say ’ I saw a movie’, you are refering to only seeing aspect of the movie. In reality, movie is an experience filled with dialogues(hearing), emotions(mind) and the images(seeing). So, seeing is the conventional term used to describe an experience. On the same token, when we say Vedic mantras were seen, we really mean that the mantras were experienced. So, our Great Rishis who experienced the mantras first time are called the Seers. Is it clear to you, now?”

Hariputra: “Absolutely clear. Fantastic explanation, Gurudev! Who is the author of these Vedic mantras?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Why are you bothered about the authorship, when we already told you that they are the Eternal Truths? This question itself is superfluous and does not make any sense!
Finding out – who wrote the Vedas and when they were written etc. – are  left as an exercise for academic researchers to discover! It makes a good topic for them to write some long theses for whatever worth. Let us leave it at that.
.
They are defined to be Eternal(i.e. timeless). Then, what is the logic in finding out when they were written? We don’t understand. Similarly, when we know that the Vedas themselves are the Absolute Truth, the question of who wrote them is simply not valid, since we human beings cannot write the Eternal Truths.
.
How can you convey the experience fully by writing? It is practically impossible. When we consider the Vedas as a form of the Absolute which is eternal, it implies that they cannot be written or created. So, they are called Apaurusheya, i.e. not authored by humans. The Vedic mantras were transmitted by Great Masters to their disciples without resorting to writing at all. This is to preserve their original phonetics intact, by imparting them orally to the worthy disciples.
.
The Vedas exist on their own always. As an analogy,  gravitational force existed, even before Newton discovered it. Just like the Universal Self, they are Anadi(without a beginning) and Ananta(without an end). In other words, they are an infinite background beyond time and space. Moreover, we cannot go and  discover a new mantra doing some meditation. The mantras reveal themselves to Great Masters of their choice; not to everybody.”

Hariputra: “Sir, now clearly understood that Holy Vedas are nothing but God. So, it is meaningless to discuss on its time of creation or authorship.  Am I correct if I say that the Vedas are eternal and of divine origin not bound by time and space? “

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Absolutely. The Supreme eternal power Goddess Gayathri is the Mother of the Vedas. It has been said:

Gayatrim chandasam mata … | – Maha Narayana Upanishat

Meaning: “(I pray) Goddess Gayathri who is the Mother of the Vedas”

Omnipotent Mother Gayathri is nothing but the Universal Self(a.k.a Brahman). Her sound form is the famous Gayathri Mantra.  Great Sage Shri Vidyaranya says:

Tasya nishswasitam Vedah |
Meaning: “The Vedas were exhaled by That. i.e. the Brahman.

To summarize, the Vedas are the God,  from the God. They are just like water in the ocean of God.  Did you understand it? ”

Hariputra: “Yes, Sir. Thanks. Can we experience these mantras even today?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Yes! Of course. The effect of mantras are independent of time and space. To feel the right effect, one has to chant the Vedic mantras clearly with proper tone, pitch and intonation. If the intonations are not correct, the Vedic mantras may not yield any desired effect.
On the other hand, they can even be harmful if pronounced wrongly. This has been clearly stated in the Vedas itself.  There is a separate branch of learning called Shiksha that deals with details of pronunciation.
One more important thing: mantras are effective only when you learn them from a Master(Guru). Also, one has to chant mantras with faith and devotion following the instructions of the Guru.”

Hariputra: “How can I learn chanting of the Vedic mantras?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: ” The chanting of Vedic mantras must be learnt from a Master. The chanting of the Vedas is not a right of everybody; But, it is a privilege.”

Hariputra: “Sir, What does it really mean? Could you please elaborate?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Sure. Only some privileged people can learn chanting of the Vedas after proper initiation and rituals. So, conditions apply! However, anybody can read(rather, should understand) the translations or commentaries on the Vedas, except chanting. This purifies the person. We are not going into further details.”

Hariputra: “Sir, Could you please tell me more on the Vedas?”

—–

OK.

Sure.  Why not? But, it is time for a break now! :-) Let us continue to learn on the Vedas in the next posts. Stay tuned to Rudraksha Yoga!

Picture of Sanskrit Manuscript of Rigveda with First Mantras

A Sanskrit Manuscript of Our Great Divine Scripture Rigveda, Showing the First Mantras

Folks,

Hari Om! Namaste!!

We had been listening to the discussion on the Vedas in the earlier post. Let us continue to learn from their conversation further.

Jnana Hariputra: “Sir, Could you please tell me more on the Vedas?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Sure. The Vedas are four in number. They are 1. Rigveda 2. Yajurveda 3. Samaveda 4. Atharvana Veda. Again, all the Vedas have four portions: 1. Samhita 2. Brahmana 3. Aranyaka 4. Upanishat.
Samhita portion has mantras to propitiate the Gods. Brahmana deals with the Vedic rituals to worship various deities. Aranyaka deals with meanings and philosophical discussions of rituals. Upanishats deal with the Highest Knowledge.

First two portions of the Vedas, viz. Samhita and Brahmana are together called Karma Kanda(Branch of Vedic Duties) or Purva Mimamsa. They form the bases of Karma Yoga. Aranyaka and Upanishat are collectively referred to as  Jnana Kanda(Branch of Knowledge) or Uttara Mimamsa. They are the core Scriptures for Jnana Yoga

Hariputra: “What are Upanishats? Why are they important?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “As we discussed earlier, Upanishats are the last parts of the Vedas. So, they are also called Vedanta(meaning last part of the Vedas). The Upanishats deal with only the Highest Knowledge. Nothing else. Our Great Realized Masters guide us on the path to realize God within ourselves. They talk about the Highest Truths from their own experience of realization.  So, they are the final authority on what they say. Out of compassion, they share the Great Truths which are profound (yet simple) and abstract(but practical), in a story line.

The Upanishads are extremely important because they guide us by imparting the Highest Knowledge to achieve the single most important purpose of life as human beings, i.e. to merge our Individual Self with the Universal Self.”

Hariputra: Bhagawan! Thanks. Now, I understood that the Upanishads are like the Sun, who is shining with the Highest Knowledge, showing the path to the Absolute. By the way, what is Rigveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “The word Rigveda is formed by combining to words Rik and Veda by a sandhi in Sanskrit. Rik means ‘to praise, to adore’. Veda means ‘to know or knowledge’.  So, Rigveda means the Knowledge of Praises(of deities).”

Hariputra: “Sir, I heard Rigveda is very vast. How is it organized?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “You are right. Just to provide you an estimate of size of Rigveda: it has 10 mandalas, 1028 suktas(hymns), 10,552 riks, or 39,831 padas or 4,32,000 syllables! Rigveda is organized into 10 books called mandalas. Each mandala is divided into hymns called suktas. Each sukta is further divided into riks (praises) and each rik has different padas. This system is used to reference individual mantras.
According to another scheme 10 mandalas of Rigveda are divided into eight parts called astakas. The astakas are further divided into adhyayas(chapters) and further into varga (class). “

Hariputra: “Sir, What are the features of a Rik?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Good question. Each rik (praise) of Rigveda is set in a particular Chandas(metre). It is addressed to a Devatha (deity). It has a Rishi(Seer). As a matter of respect, it is customary to mention these three aspects of the mantra before we chant.”

Jnana Hariputra: ” Oh! I see. Sir, Could you please give an example?”

Sujnan Giri: “OK. The first mantra of Rigveda starts as:
AgnimiLe purohitam yajnasya devamritwijam|
hotaram ratnadhatamam | – Rigveda 1.1

Meaning: Laud Agni who is: the chosen Priest, God, minister of sacrifice, the hotar. Agni lavishes the wealth.

Rishi of this mantra is Madhuschandah Vaishwamitrah. It is composed in Chandas Gayathri and addressed to Devata  Agni, i.e. the Fire God. “

Hariputra: “Sir, I understood that these three aspects, viz., Rishi, Chandas and Devatha are important for each mantra. Could you please give a glimpse of these in Rigveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Sure. Main Rishis in Rigveda include Angirasa, Vasista, Vishwamitra, Bhrigu, Atri, Kashyapa and others. Most used Chandas are Jagati, Trishtup, Viraj, Gayatri and Anustup. They have twelve, eleven, ten, eight and eight syllables respectively. Principle deities addressed in Rigveda are Indra(king of demigods), Agni(the Fire God) and Soma(many meanings: a plant, Moon, Lord Shiva, etc.). The other deities are Surya(Sun God), Vayu(Air God) and Apas(Water God) and many others. “

Hariputra:Bhagawan! I heard about famous Gayatri Mantra. Is it from Rigveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Yes. As we discussed earlier, Mother Gayathri is the Supreme power of Brahman. Gayathri Mantra is the sound form of Devi Gayathri.  So, it is one of the most powerful mantras.  It appears in third mandala of Rigveda in the verse 3.62.10 (3rd Mandala; 62nd Sukta and 10th Rik). Its Seer is the Great Sage Maharishi Vishwamitra. The Chandas is Gayathri. It is addressed to the Deity the Sun God. “

Hariputra: Gurudev! Thank you very much for gracing me knowledge on the Vedas and Rigveda in particular. I am blessed!”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “You are welcome!

Sarve janah sukhino bhavatu! (May everybody be happy!) “

Some thoughts on the views from a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy ;) )

The numbers speak for themselves! As you can see, there is an almost exponential growth of views and visitors(please see the picture above). Apparently, there is an unmet need for authentic traditional information on the topics of Sanatana Dharma, such as traditional yoga, Highest Knowledge, Hindu Deities  and  others.  Right?
.
However, if you analyze the topics of top readership carefully poring over the data, it becomes very clear that most of our readers are interested in knowing more on esoteric secrets and symbolism of various Hindu Deities. Consequently, the viewership data is skewed heavily towards Hindu Deities category alone!

What it means is this: most of our readers have not read any articles on the core topics of the blog, e.g. traditional yoga or the Highest Knowledge.
.
Of course, reasons can be many:

  1. Some visitors may be one click readers, i.e. those who landed up in our website while looking for some specific information or answer to a particular question. Thus, they may not be interested in our focus areas of  the blog.
  2. Some are not yet ready to grasp more complex logic of the Highest Knowledge.
  3. Lack of practical experience in the Traditional Yoga or exposure to spiritual realm.
  4. Skepticism resulting out of committing the classical mistake of applying so called scientific logic to higher spiritual concepts!

So, in this context, we would like to suggest our esteemed readers to at least give a try to understand concept of the Highest Knowledge supported by practicing any form of traditional yoga under an adept Master. This way it would help them achieve the highest goal of life, i.e. Rudraksha Yoga!

From the traffic statistics, we can easily notice that almost 50% of our readers are from India! We really welcome this trend. Many of our own people are interested in knowing about our great heritage based on our eternal religion Sanatana Dharma(a.k.a Hinduism) and its Highest teachings to the world. It is a very good sign indeed, especially in the era of blind imitation by wearing a foreign spectacle, forgetting  that we have our own eyes of the Highest Knowledge that give us the clear vision of the world and beyond!

Dilemma of Addressing Likes Vs. Needs of the Readers

As we can see, the web traffic data reflects the likes of our readers, i.e. general articles on the secret insights of the Hindu deities. Our focus of this blog is the real needs of our readers, i.e. the Highest Knowledge, understanding the Shiva- Shakti principles and traditional yoga. So, there is a clear dilemma on which topic to emphasize in the blog.

According to most people, the solution is a no brainer! Right? Common sense is to cater the likes of the readers. So, what gets published on the blog must be dictated by what its readers like to see! In other words, the author should meet the expectations of his/her readers.

This line of the thinking is in accordance with that of an editor of a commercial news paper or other bloggers who are hungry to get name or fame, i.e. publish/write whatever their audience likes! So, in this case, readers indirectly dictate or control the content. To put it in the business parlance, the demand determines what gets sold in the market. Otherwise, without returns or profits, the enterprise ceases to exist.

On the other hand, we would like to take the opposite approach. It is the path of social service, without any expectation of return. So, we are not at all bothered about the short term likes/dislikes of our readers. Instead, our focus is on the long term needs of our readers and the society at large. So, although the traffic statistics reflect the likes of the reader base, i.e. topics like Hindu deities, we will focus on the Highest knowledge, real yoga etc. keeping the long term needs of our readers.

This also helps us to retain our absolute freedom to write on the topics we like or the subject we get the insights on. Thus, it does not force us to publish on the subject in which we have neither the expertise nor experience. Thus, in Rudraksha Yoga, we control the content, not the readers.

However, we provide free access to the articles to help everybody. As we are not at all concerned about mass traffic, our anticipation is that only the qualified and interested individuals would be reading our posts.

Concerns and the Path Forward

As discussed, unfortunately, there is a very less readership for articles on traditional yoga in general and Raja Yoga in particular. So, there is a great need to reach the critical mass to disseminate the right knowledge in this domain. To achieve this, we invite everybody to help us  in spreading the wealth of Highest Knowledge, described in our Divine Scriptures and practiced by our Great Masters, to the worthy and the needy.

Moving forward, irrespective of statistical indications, our focus of the blog will continue to be on the Highest Knowledge and Traditional Yoga. We strongly believe that our Sadguru’s Grace and Shridevi’s Inspiration will be on our side and continue to support in our mission as ever. Our salutations to them.

Words of Gratitude

Only by our Sadguru’s Grace and Shridevi’s inspiration, we could contribute a little to our society in some way to enrich everybody with the Highest Knowledge.  We pay our humble gratitude and respect to these Great Divine Forces for providing us an opportunity to share our insights  to help one and all, worldwide.

Enjoy Reading! Have fun!!

Soundarya Lahari – Shloka #5: Divine Shridevi as the Source of Fascinating Attraction and Illusive Power !

Picture of Shri Lalita Maha Tripra Sundari

Charmingly Beautiful Our  Great Mother Shri Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari (Source: Google)

Harih tvam aradhya pranata-jana-saubhagya-jananim

Smaro’pi tvam natva rati-nayana-lehyena vapusha
Muninam apyantah prabhavati hi mohaya mahatam ||

Meaning:
Shridevi ! Worshiping thee, who are the bestower of prosperity on all your votaries, Lord Vishnu was able to assume a charming a female form. Thus, he stirred the waves of passion in the mind of even Lord Shiva!
Also, adoring thee Manmatha(Kama; Cupid, God of love) got a beautiful form which is feast for the eyes of his consort Rati Devi. By his form, he is able cause deep infatuation even in the minds of sages!

Our Insights:

  1. Once demigods(Devas) and Daemons(Dananavas) together churned the ocean of milk to get the nectar(amrita). Anybody who drinks Amrita becomes immortal. A fight ensued between both Devas and Danavas while sharing the nectar. To resolve the conflict,  Lord Vishnu took a female form Mohini to distribute the nectar only to  demigods(Devas). All Danavas were mesmerized by looking at Mohini and they could not know that the nectar is not getting served to them!
    .
  2. As we know, Lord Shiva is Yogeeshwara(The Supreme Teacher of traditional yoga) and is beyond all passions and desires. Mohini was so charming that even Lord Shiva was attracted to her to go behind her!
Great sages  have also conquered all the desires. However, Cupid(Manmatha) is so enchanting that he stimulates the feeling of infatuation even in their minds!
    .
The phrase mohaya mahatam means extreme desire or extreme illusion. Shridevi herself is called Great Illusion(Mahamaya). So, it illustrates the illusive power of Shridevi. When She could bring the illusion to Lord Shiva who is her own spouse, what about human beings? So, this phrase emphasizes great illusive power of Shridevi.
    .
  3. This Shloka says that Mohini and Manmatha got their fascinating beauty and charming power by worshiping the Great Mother Shridevi. Since Shridevi is granting these powers to these deities, as a source of beauty, how fascinating and attractive She could be? We can’t even guess, right?
    .
  4. No doubt, by definition, Shri Tripura Sundari Devi  is extremely beautiful in all three worlds. Moreover, She is kind and magnanimous to grant exceptionally attractive beauty and charming power to her staunch devotees. She not only has the supreme beauty, but she gives it to us too! In other words, She is very kind and magnanimous towards her votaries.
    .
  5. The first two lines of the verse, talk about Lord Vishnu who acquired fascinating beauty aspect of Shridevi. The next two, deal with the illusive power aspect of Shridevi. So, beauty and power features of Shridevi and Soundarya Lahari have been described exceedingly well in this verse.  If you are interested to know more on the concept of Shridevi’s extrinsic beauty and intrinsic power aspects, you may read a separate article here.
    .
  6. Pranata-jana-saubhagya-jananim means Shridevi is the source of prosperity to her devotees. Soubhagya means prosperity and janani is who generates it, or source. The phrase saubhagya janani therefore means source of prosperity. This phrase extols the Shri Lakshmi aspect of Shridevi that graces prosperity to devotees.
    .
  7. Pranata-jana-saubhagya-jananim means Shridevi is prosperous mother for devotees. The word saubhagya means prosperity and janani means Mother. So, the meaning of saubhagya-jananim becomes prosperous Mother. This meaning focuses the affectionate and caring motherly nature of Shridevi towards Her devotees.
    .
  8. The word pranata-jana is very significant. It means devotees.  Shridevi bestows prosperity to her devotees. Also, She showers Her motherly care only onto her devotees. Not on everybody!
    .
How do we get the meaning that others are excluded? If prosperity and motherly care are for everybody, then the verse would say jana(i.e. people), not pranata-jana meaning devotees. So, the message of the shloka is that we must be Shridevi’s devotees and pray her to get Her Grace followed by prosperity.
    .
  9. The phrase Rati nayana lehyena means feast for eyes of Rati Devi, who is the consort of Cupid(Kama Deva). Actually, Rati Devi herself is known as the icon of beauty. Even she is looking at beautiful Kama Deva to appreciate his fascinating splendor.
    .
How did Kama Deva get this charming beauty? He got it from the source, i.e. the most beautiful in three worlds, Shridevi Maha Tripura Sundari. Not just like that. He prayed her with complete devotion. So, again the message is loud and clear: prayer with devotion and humility is the most important way to get Shridevi’s Grace.

Words of Beauty: The following bunches of words contribute to beauty and melodious rhythm of the verse: jana-jananim; puraa-Puraripu;tvam-natva; mohaya-mahatam. Relish and enjoy!

Let us pray the Divine Mother Shridevi for her Grace.

Durgam Devim sharanamaham prapadye |

Our Great Master: Sage Shri Yajnavalkya, who brought us the Divine Scripture Yajurveda

Folks,

Hari Om! Namaste!!

In our earlier articles, Great Master Shri Sujnan Giri was discussing with Jnana Hariputra about the Vedas in general and Rigveda in particular.  Let us continue to learn more on the Vedas by listening to their interesting and informative conversation.

Note: It is a mandatory prerequisite to have a basic knowledge on the Vedas and Rigveda to follow this discussion.

Hariputra: Bhagawan! Namaste! I have some more questions on the Holy Vedas. May I request you to grace the answers?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Namaste, Jnana. Sure.  Go ahead!”

Hariputra: “What is Yajurveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Let us try to understand the meaning of the word Yajurveda. It is composed of two words Yajuh and Veda. By combining these two words by Sanskrit Sandhi(a way of joining two words), we get the word Yajurveda. Yajuh comes from the Sanskrit root yaj, meaning to worship by rituals. As we already know, Veda means knowledge.
.
Therefore, Yajurveda is the knowledge of worshiping deities by Vedic rituals. Accordingly, Yajurveda deals with various Vedic sacrificial rituals(yajnas) such as Ashwamedha Yaga, Rajasooya Yaga, Vajapeya Yaga and so on.”

Hariputra: “Then, what is Krishna Yajurveda? “

Shri Sujnan Giri: “In Sanskrit Krishna means black. There is a little story here.
.
Entire Yajurveda is intricately linked with Great Sage Shri Yajnavalkya. Sage Yajnavalkya was learning Yajurveda with his Master Sage Vaishampayana. He was a brilliant disciple with razor-sharp intellect. Due to some  misunderstanding, Sage Vaishampayana got angry on Sage Yajnavalkya. The Guru(Master) asked Yajnavalkya to return whatever he taught.
.
Obeying the order of his Guru, Yajnavalkya returned the entire Yajurveda that he learned in the form of digested food. Vaishampayana’s other disciples became partridge birds(Tittiri) and ate it.  So, this portion of Yajurveda is also called Taittiriya Samhita(Samhita of Tittiri birds). It is also known as Krishna Yajurveda(Black Yajurveda). Got it?”

Hariputra: “Absolutely. Is there a similar story for Shukla Yajurveda too?”

Shri Sujnan Giri:“Of course! You guessed it right. Earlier story continues. The Sage Yajnavalkya was determined to know Yajurveda. So, he decided not to approach any other human Master any more! :) To achieve his goal, he propitiated Lord Surya(Sun God).
.
The Sun God took a form of a horse and taught the Sage Yajnavalkya the portions of Yajurveda that are different from Krishna Yajurveda. Since this portion of Yajurveda was revealed by the Lord Sun, it is called Shukla Yajurveda(White Yajurveda).
.
This portion has been revealed by a horse(In Sanskrit, vaji).  Vajasana means Lord Surya. So, Shukla Yajurveda is also called Vajasaneyi Samhita(Samhita from Lord Surya/horse).
.
Thus, the Sage Yajnavalkya played a pivotal role in bringing Yajurveda to us. Our humble salutations to him.”

Hariputra: Bhagawan! Apart from the historical origin,  is there any other difference between these two portions of Yajurveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri:“Good question. In Krishna Yajurveda, both mantras(chants) and Brahmana (descriptions) portions are mixed. According to some Masters, due to this mixing the Veda became slightly obscure, hence it is symbolically called Krishna which means dark or obscure. On the other hand, Shukla Yajurveda has a separate Brahmana portion called Shatapatha Brahmana that describes the mantras. So, due to this clear-cut separation of Samhita and Brahmana, this portion is called Shukla Yajurveda meaning white or clear Yajurveda.”

Hariputra:“I love your fantastic crystal clear explanation! Sir, What are the different branches in Yajurveda mantras?”

Shri Sujnan Giri:“The mantras of Yajurveda have many branches. The Shukla Yajurveda has two shakhas(branches): 1. Vajasaneyi Madhyandina 2. Vajasaneyi Kanva. The branches of Krishna Yajurveda Samhita are: 1. Taittiriya  2. Maitrayani  3. Katha  4. Kapishtala Katha.”

Hariputra: “What is the peculiarity of style of presentation in Yajurveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: Rigveda and Samaveda are mainly in verses set in a particular Chandas(metre). But, Yajurveda is more inclined towards free prose. The same is said as:
Gadyatmako Yajuh |
It has also been said:
Aniyataksharavasano Yajuh |
Meaning: Yajurveda has unrestricted use of letters and ending.
In other words, it is not bound by any metrical forms, in general. However, there are some verses too.  Interestingly, the verses of 663 mantras of Rigveda are also present, as they are,  in Yajurveda.”

Hariputra: “Sir, Is there any popular mantra from Yajurveda that is used in our day to day rituals?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “The most popular Yajurveda Mantra is Shri Rurdam which appears in Krishna Yajurveda.  It is also called Shatarudriya, since it extols Lord Shiva by his 108 names. It is a very powerful hymn to Lord Shiva. Shri Rudram also contains powerful five syllable mantra Om Namah Shivaya(I salute to Lord Shiva, who is myself) and the potent mantra – Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya(I salute to Lord Shiva who is myself).
.
A Great Shiva devotee, Shri Appayya Dikshita was a follower of Rigveda. He once commented that he could have born in the family of Yajurveda followers, so that he could worship Lord Shiva by Shri Rudram in a more authoritative way.   .

Although, Purusha Sukta, the great hymn to Lord Vishnu belongs to Rigveda, the accents and intonations from Yajurveda are popularly used.”

Hariputra: “I heard that Yajurveda furnished the core  foundations to Advaitha (Non-dual) philosophy of our Great Universal Master Shankara Bhagavatpadah. Is that correct?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: ” You are absolutely right! According to our Masters, any philosophical theory must have three components: 1. Sutras(aphorisms) 2. Bhashya(commentary to the Sutras) 3. Vartika(explanatory notes on the Bhashya).
.
In case of our Great Master Shri Shankara Bhagavatpadah’s Advaitha(non-dual) philosophy, Upanishats are sutras. Shri Bhagavatpadah himself wrote Bhashya on these. Further, Varthikas for Upanishats Taittiriya and Brihadaranyaka were written by great disciple of Shri Bhagavatpadah, Shri Sureshwaracharya Padah. These Upanishats belong to Krishna Yajurveda and Shukla Yajurveda respectively. Thus, Yajurveda is an extremely important Veda that provides solid bases for Advaitha philosophy. Got it?”

Hariputra: “Yes Sir! I am curious to know more on the Holy Vedas. What is Samaveda?”

Shri Sujnan Giri: “Jnana! It is about time for my spiritual practice.  Let us discuss Samaveda in our next meeting. OK?”

Hariputra: “Fine, Bhagawan! Thank you very much for gracing the clear knowledge on the Yajurveda. I am really fortunate.”

Hariputra touched the lotus feet of the Great Master with reverence and left with the blessings.

…To be continued. Stay tuned!

Most Beautiful Divine Mother Shridevi Lalita Mahatripra Sundari

Tvadiyam saundaryam Tuhina-giri-kanye tulayitum

Yadalokautsukyad amara-lalana yanti manasa
Tapobhir dush-prapam api girisha-sayujya-padavim ||
- Soundarya Lahari 12

Benefits: To attain Lord Shiva; To make a dumb person speak.

Meaning: O daughter of Himalayas(Shridevi !), the foremost poets, such as Lord Brahma, imagined to compare your beauty.(with that of celestial damsels, Rambha, Urvashi etc., but,)
Celestial damsels themselves, with their eagerness to appreciate your beauty, mentally attain the state of oneness with Lord Shiva.
This is hard to attain even by severe penance.

Insights:

  1. Lord Brahma is the greatest creative poet. He is the expert in even creating such a complex universe. Once, he imagined to compare Shridevi’s beauty to celestial damsels. Then, he noted that the damsels themselves are appreciating the beauty of Shridevi !
    .
How can he compare Shridevi to them? Since the damsels focus their attention so pointedly on the beauty of Shridevi, almost like meditation, they feel the oneness with Lord Shiva. How is that possible? Let us understand it clearly.
    .
We discussed oneness of Shridevi and Lord Shiva in the first shloka of Soundarya Lahari. If one prays Shridevi, automatically Lord Shiva is also adored! So, by focusing attention on the beauty of Shridevi, damsels attained oneness with Shridevi and thereby Lord Shiva too.
    .
  2. Merging with Lord Shiva is possible by severe penance. But, the damsels in their eagerness to appreciate the beauty of Shridevi, got engrossed fully, as though in Samadhi state. Thus, they easily merged with Lord Shiva.
    .
  3. Esoteric Meaning: The divine damsels attained Lord Shiva just by seeing the beauty of Shridevi. What does it tell us? Oneness of Lord Shiva and Shakti(Shridevi).   How?  Since there is no difference between Shiva and Shakti, getting engrossed  in the beauty of Shridevi is same as merging with Lord Shiva!
    .
So, the message is clear: It does not matter whether you pray Shridevi or Lord Shiva. You are essentially adoring the same eternal Supreme Shakti(Power), who is also Lord Shiva.
    .
  4. Hidden Meaning: The shloka extols the Ardhanarishwara form(half male-half female body) of Lord Shiva, in which Lord Shiva and Shridevi Parvati occupy the right and left halves of the same body. So, if you pray Lord Shiva or Shridevi, you are really praying the same deity Ardhanarishwara form of the Lord Shiva.
    .
  5. The Beauty and the Power – Perspective #1: According to this verse, appreciation of the external beauty of Shridevi automatically takes us to the eternal abode of Lord Shiva. In other words, Shridevi has the power to get us liberation by her mesmerizing beauty.
    .
So, Shridevi’s extrinsic beauty and intrinsic power are very intricately linked, just like word and its meaning(Vagartha).  These two aspects are the essence of Soundarya Lahari hymn. You may go through a detailed discussion on this confluence of Shridevi’s beauty and power, if you are really interested.
    .
  6. The Beauty and the Power – Perspective #2: The two lines of the verse starting with phrase twadiyam saundaryam implies soundarya (beauty) aspect of Shridevi. They describe unmatched glamor of Shridevi. The lines starting with Tapobhir-dushprapam echo the Shakti (power) attribute of Shridevi. It says Shridevi’s beauty has the power to get us the eternal abode of Lord Shiva.  As discussed above in #6, again it suggests the blend of beauty and power within Shridevi, which is the heart of Soundarya Lahari.
    .
  7. Eligibility to Worship Shridevi: Why does the verse bring the two contrasting characters, i.e.  damsels and penance(tapas), in to discussion? Let us analyze.
    .
The damsels are the celestial dancers who perform in the court of Lord Indra, the king of heaven. So, they  represent every one of us, who are dancing(immersed) in the material life and luxuries. The severe penance is generally meant for saints. The saints renounce the temporary material life to focus fully on accessing the eternal bliss of the Ultimate Reality.
    .
According to the verse, the damsels easily attain the Ultimate Reality which is difficult to access by even by severe penance. How do damsels achieve it?  By their minds (yanti manasa ),  by beholding the beauty of Shridevi. Damsels are equally eligible like saints to adore Shridevi, irrespective of their materialistic background.
    .
The verse implies: Shridevi can be easily attained even by people delved  in material life, if they put their minds in praying Her with devotion to see Her splendidly glorious form.
    .
  8. Devotion is the Key: Actually, damsels must have prayed Shridevi to have an opportunity to see Her. Although, this is not explicitly told in the verse, it is echoed by the word dushprapam, meaning Shridevi is not easily accessible.  Further, manasa yati (by mind) suggests that the one-pointed devotion is the key ingredient that helps us to behold Shridevi’s grandeur.
    .
  9. In summary, the shloka declares: Shridevi is extremely beautiful. There is no comparison. Period! Merging with Lord Shiva is the highest purpose of human life. If we are fortunate to have a look at Shridevi to appreciate the beauty, we focus so one-pointedly that easily (maybe unknowingly!) we would attain the oneness with Lord Shiva! We must pray Her with devotion for that to happen. There is no shortcut. Got it?

Words of Beauty: Here are some bunch of words that enhance the melodious rhythm of the verse: Tvadi-yam:saundar-yam; tu-hina:tu-layitum; ka-vindrah:ka-lpante:ka-thamapi; tapo-bir:dush-prapam.

What are you waiting for? Let us adore the most beautiful Shridevi and pray her to appear before us to achieve the  real goal of life and yoga!

Narayani namostute |

We salute Shridevi Naryani (for her kind Grace).

Soundarya Lahari – Shloka #15: Devoted Prayer to Shridevi Graces the Brilliant Poetic Power!

Supreme Mother Shridevi Lalita Maha Tripura Sundari

Sakrn na thva nathva katham iva sathaam sannidadhate
Madhu-kshira-drakhsa-madhurima-dhurinah phanitayah ||
- Soundarya Lahari 15

Benefits: Ability to Write Poems and to Become a Scholar.

Meaning: O Shridevi ! You have a cool and pleasing luster of autumnal moonlight. You wear crescent moon on plaited locks on your head.
You display varada (boon giving) and abhaya (“don’t fear”) gestures by two of your hands. You are sporting rosary of crystal beads and a book on other two hands.
If good people pray you even once,
you bestow such a poetic power that torrents of sweet words excelling even honey-milk and grapes start flowing from their mouths!

Insights:

  1. If devotees pray the form of Shridevi with varada-abhaya gestures and holding crystal rosary and a book even once,  She bestows them with extraordinary poetic skills.  This form of Shridevi resembles that of Shri Saraswati Devi. It may be noted that this form  is different from that of Shri Mahatripura Sundari who does not show varada-abhaya gestures as discussed earlier. .
    .
  2. By the way, Shridevi is also called Vak(Speech) in our Holy Vedas. Even the Great Poet Kalidasa prayed Shridevi as Vak in his famous Vagarthaviva shloka. According to a legend, Great Poet Kalidasa was a dull person. But, he was a staunch devotee of Shridevi too. He obtained great poetic skills by praying Shridevi. This is the testimony to the power of Shridevi’s Grace that is elaborated in this shloka.
    .
  3. Esoteric Meaning #1: The words vara, trasa-trana and pustaka-karam have been strategically used to indicate three powers of Shridevi. Let us understand how.
    .
Vara means varada (boon-giving) gesture. It implies the Shri Mahalakshmi aspect of Shridevi, who bestows prosperity to her devotees. Trasa-trana means abhaya(“don’t fear) gesture of Shridevi which protects from dangers. What is the biggest danger, after all? It is being in the infinite birth and death cycle.  So, Shridevi’s aspect of Shri Mahakali grants us liberation(moksha) from this dangerously vicious cycle. Now, look at the word pustaka-karam(holding a book in a hand). It indicates Shri Mahasaraswati attribute of Shridevi, which confers the knowledge.
    .
Thus, the shloka implicitly says that even if we pray Shridevi only once, She would grant us the knowledge, prosperity and liberation. What else do we need?
    .
  4. Esoteric Meaning #2: Focus on the words Shashi-yuta jata-juta, meaning “with the Moon and plaited hair”. The Moon is symbolic of Shridevi’s Mahalakshmi aspect that bestows prosperity and material comforts(bhoga) to her votaries. The Divine Scripture Rigveda says:
    .
Chandram hiranmayim Lakshmim Jatavedo ma avaha | – Shri Sukta from Rigveda
Meaning: O Agni, bring me Shri Lakshmi who is the Moon and the embodiment of gold.
    .
Generally, saints and ascetics, who are in the path to liberation have plaited hair. So, the word plaited hair esoterically indicates Shridevi’s Mahakali aspect that grants liberation(moksha) to her devotees.
    .
  5. Esoteric Meaning #3: The word makuta means crown. It indicates the ruler or the queen. So, by the discussion above, it echoes that Shridevi is the ruler of both material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha). Thus, She has the power to confer both of these to her staunch devotees.

In a nutshell, the shloka suggests that if we pray Shridevi even once with complete devotion and surrender to her, She grants us gift of eloquence, literary skills, knowledge, prosperity and liberation.

So, let us pray her many times with devotion to get her complete Grace!

Words of Beauty: The following words offer sweet melody and rhythm to the verse: sha-rat, shu-ddham, sha-shi; ju-ta, maku-ta; tra-sa, tra-na; spha-tika, gu-tika; na tva-natva; ka-thamiva, sa-tham;ma-dhuri-ma, dhuri-nah. Relish and enjoy!

Soundarya Lahari – Shloka #6: Cupid(Kama Deva) is Powerful and Wins the Entire World by the Grace of Shridevi !

Picture of Shridevi Lalita Tripura Sundari

Omnipotent Mother Shridevi Lalita Tripura Sundari

Shridevi’s Grace grants extreme power to otherwise weak Kama Deva!

Dhanuh paushpam maurvi madhu-kara-mayi pancha vishikha
Vasantah samanto Malaya-maruda yodhana-rathah |
Tathapyekah sarvam Himagiri-suthe kam api kripaam
Apangat te labdhva jagadidam Anango vijayate ||
- Soundarya Lahari 6

Benefits: Getting sons as progeny.

Meaning:
[Look at Kama Deva(Cupid) and his weak equipment!]His bow is of flower!
Bow-string is just a line of honey bees!
He has only five arrows(made up flower again)!
His minister is spring season(who is unreliable and undependable). His chariot in the battle is Malaya breeze(which is formless and unstable)!
O daughter of Mountain(Shridevi)! blessed by your little bit of Grace by your side-glance, Kama Deva is able to win over the entire world all alone by himself!

Insights:

  1. Kama Deva(cupid), the Lord of passion, has too many weak points: bows and arrows made up of flowers, undependable minister(Spring season) and unstable battle chariot, Malaya breeze. With all these, Kama Deva is able to conquer the entire world! How is that feasible?
    .
It is possible only because of a little Grace bestowed by a side-glance of Shridevi. Indirectly, it means that Shridevi is infinitely powerful, since her side-glance itself empowers weak Kama Deva to win over the world, all alone.
    .
  2. Think about the words: Thathapyekah sarvam meaning “However, he alone”. Although, cupid has weak accessories such as flower bow, only five flower arrows, spring as a minister and so on, he does not even need to take the help of any of these.
    .
A little Grace of Shridevi, granted by her side-glance, is enough to win the entire world, alone(Ekah). In fact, indirectly it means that cupid is not winning the world! But, Shridevi’s Grace does the real job to make him victorious.  It shows the immense power of Shridevi’s very little Grace offered by very quick side-glance!
    .
  3. Focus on the phrase: kamapi kripam apangatte labhdva(by getting a little Grace by the side-glance) – cupid wins the entire world alone! Now, what happens if Shridevi’s  entire Grace is on us by her kind affectionate and caring look? We are unable to even imagine the power and its outcome!
    .
  4. Tantric Meaning: Seed of desire(Kama beeja), Klim is concealed in the verse. K from kam api, L from malaya,  I from maurvi and M from paushpam together form the seed syllable of desire, Klim.
    .
  5. Esoteric Meaning #1: Look at the phrase:
apangatte kamapi kripam  labhdva jagadidam Anango vijayathe |
By getting a little bit of Grace from your side-glance, cupid(Kama Deva) conquers the world, albeit being weak.
    .
It further means that anybody who is as weak as cupid by nature, can win the world and rule it like a king, by just a side-glance of Shridevi. In other words, Shridevi’s Grace bestows material prosperity(bhoga) to any devotee who maybe even poor.
    .
The phrase jagadidam vijayathe (conquers this world) implies that the devotee wins over this temporary material world and gets liberation(moksha) from vicious birth and death cycle by the Grace of Shridevi.
    .
In summary, Shridevi grants material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation (moksha) to her devotees, just by her Graceful side-glance!
    .
  6. Esoteric Meaning #2: Again, ponder on jagadidam vijayathe meaning wins the world. Just a kind look of Shridevi can make the devotee a king in this world or a liberated(God-realized) person, beyond the world.
    .
  7. Esoteric Meaning #3: Further, jagadidam vijayathe implies that a little bit of Grace of Shridevi, imparted by her momentary side-glance, can bestow prosperity(bhoga) for devotees who are house-holders with family responsibilities. If the devotee is an ascetic, Shridevi’s Grace offers him/her the liberation(moksha).
    .
So, Shridevi needs to be worshiped by everybody, no matter whether one likes to enjoy the material prosperity or the supreme bliss of eternal abode of Shridevi.

Words of Beauty: The following words contribute to the sweet melody and rhythm for the verse: vas-anthah, sam-anthah; ma-laya, ma-rudha, yo-dhana; rathah, thatha-pyekah; kri-pam, apam-gatte.

Let us pray Shridevi with devotion for her kind and Graceful look on us!

Shridevi Lalita Mahatripura Sundari: Cool and Beautiful!

Kirantim angebhyah kirana-nikurumbaamrita-rasam

Sa sarpanam darpam shamayati shakuntadhipa iva
Jvara-plushtan drishtya sukhayati sudhadhara-siraya ||
- Soundarya Lahari 20

Benefits: Curing of all poisons and fevers.

Meaning:
Shridevi ! Your limbs are emanating cool rays of nectar,
One who contemplates you in his heart, contains you with cool nectar, just like a statue carved out of Moon, (So-)
He cures the fever of a person, by a mere look with his cool nectar filled channel(nadi),
Just like Garuda quelling the pride of divine serpents.

Insights:

  1. By definition, Devi means one who shines(Divyati iti Devi). All the limbs of Shridevi shine with cool rays of nectar. Her body is compared to a statue carved out of a moon who is cool and pleasant!
    .
If we contemplate her in our heart, she will reside in us with her cool and shining nectar. Because of this, our sight also becomes so cool and pleasant that just by a look we can cure the fever of a person!
    .
How? Just like Garuda quelling the pride of divine serpents.
    .
  2. Lord Garuda is a bird that resembles an eagle.  He is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.  According to Scriptures Puranas, Garuda and divine serpents(sarpas) do not get along well. Garuda is extremely powerful when compared to serpents.  Just by his looks, the serpents are scared and retreat by giving up their pride!
    .
Actually, any disease can be cured by nectar.  Fever is just an example of a disease.  It is mentioned that look of the devotee is like nectar-filled channel.  In fact, power of curing any disease by a mere look, can be obtained by praying cool and peaceful Shridevi.
    .
  3. This verse suggests that Shridevi cures any disease of Her devotee. She also bestows a wonderful and mystical capability for the devotee to  cure any disease of an other person. Thus, She is very magnanimous and kind for her devotees.
    .
  4. Esoteric Meaning #1: Focus on the word amrita-rasam which means nectar. It also means the juice of immortality. It suggests that Shridevi is the source and eternal abode of immortality. It indicates the power of Shridevi to bestow liberation(moksha) for her devotees from temporary world and vicious birth and death cycle. This is the Shri Mahakali aspect of Shridevi who presides the function of liberation.
    .
Nectar also signifies the bliss experienced during certain types of traditional yoga, e.g. Kundalini Yoga.
    .
  5. Esoteric Meaning #2: Look at the word Himakara meaning the Moon. The Rigveda says:
    .
Chandram Hiranmayim Lakshmim…| – Shri Sukta from Rigveda
Meaning: (O Jatavedas! Bring me) Shri Lakshmi who is golden colored and is Moon.
    .
It implies the Shri Lakshmi aspect of Shridevi who bestows prosperity and material enjoyment(bhoga). Therefore, this word Himakara suggests that Shridevi confers material prosperity to her devotees.
    .
  6. Esoteric Meaning #3: The words sukhayati(pleases/fulfills) implies Grace bestowing power(anugraha shakti) of Shridevi. The phrase darpam shamayati (quells the pride) echoes the quelling or neutralizing power(nigraha shakti) of Shridevi. Both these powers anugraha and nigraha are represented by varada(boon-giving) and abhaya(“don’t fear”) gestures of Shridevi respectively.
    .
  7. Secret Hidden Meaning: Ponder on the phrase Jwara-plushtan drishtya sukhayati sudhadhara-siraya meaning just by a look cools down the fever by his stream of nectar. It suggests that Shridevi provides the Grace bestowing power to her devotee to make him a Sadguru(Realized Master).
    .
The Sadguru cools down the heat of suffering(jwara) of people who are struggling in the  ephemeral world by bestowing them Shaktipat by his kind cooling look to awaken the Mother Kundalini.
    .
Moreover, in this context, sudha means nectar or bliss. The word adhara suggests the first psychic chakra, Muladhara. The subtle channels are implied by sira(channel). So, these words echo the fundamental elements of the Kundalini Yoga.
    .
Further, focus again on the word sudha-adhara-sira. It means the principal channel(nadi/sira), viz., Sushumna which supports(adhara) the movement of Mother Kundalini who flows as nectar/bliss(sudha). Remember, Mother Kundalini is no one else other than Shridevi! Enough said. Let us not go into further details here.

What are we waiting for? Let us pray Shridevi for her divine Grace!

Words of Beauty: Here are the words that furnish a sweet melody and beautiful rhythm to the verse: ki-rantim, ki-rana; sa, sa-rpanam, da-rpam; sha-mayati, sha-kuntadhipa; plu-shtan, dri-shtya; su-khayati, su-dha-dha-ra, si-ra-ya; Relish and enjoy!

Shridevi Lalitambika : Easily Pleased by Devoted Prayers!

Bhavani Tvam daase mayi vitara drishtim sakarunam

Tadaiva Tvam tasmai dishasi nija-sayujya-padaveem
Mukunda-Brahmendra-sphuta-makuta-nirajita-padam ||
- Soundarya Lahari 22

Benefits: Getting of all powers.

Meaning:
Shridevi! If one desires to pray you: “Bhavani! You please cast your merciful glance on me who is your slave”, the moment he just says – “Bhavani! You…”,  you  would give him your eternal abode which is identical with you. Your abode is rendered lustrous by nirajana(waving of light during the worship) of the brilliant crowns of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Indra.

Exposition:
This shloka suggests that Shridevi is easily pleased by prayers of her devotees. Actually, by her very nature, Shridevi is stotra priya, i.e. she likes prayers! So, we don’t have to perform elaborate rituals such as yajna, yaaga, homa etc. Just a devoted prayer is all that is required to propitiate her.

According to this Shloka, we need to completely surrender to her like a slave (dasa) with complete devotion to receive her kind Grace. Even getting a simple and kind look of Shridevi is more than enough to have her full Grace!

Her abode is made lustrous by waving of brilliant lights from the crowns of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Indra. It shows the supremacy of Shridevi vis-a-vis other deities.

There are two perspectives to consider about Shridevi’s  abode:

  1. Abode as Shridevi’s place: The supreme deities such as Lord Vishnu are also in Shridevi’s place to worship her to get her kind Grace.
    .
  2. Shridevi’s abode as Herself: The brilliant powers of Lord Vishnu and other supreme deities are present within Shridevi herself(i.e. in her abode)!

What kind of status does Shridevi bestow us if we pray her?

Her eternal abode of sayujya(one with herself), i.e. we will be one with her divine power. This means that we get moksha  or liberation from continuous birth and death cycle. So, this shloka suggests the path of devotion(Bhakti yoga) to merge with Shridevi.

According to Scriptures, there are four types of liberation:

  1. Salokya : Going to the place of Shridevi.
  2. Sameepya : Going very close to Shridevi in her abode.
  3. Saroopya: Becoming the form of Shridevi.
  4. Sayujya: Ultimately, merging with the power of Shridevi herself.

As we can see, achieving sayujya status by merging with Shridevi is the final and the ultimate form of liberation(moksha). This is possible just by praying Shridevi with complete surrender and devotion.
.
Also, from the perspective of material life and enjoyment(bhoga), Shridevi graces a wealthy and royal status(padavi) in the society(vide infra, esoteric insight #5 for details).

Esoteric Insights:

  1. The words Bhavani Tvam indicates Mahavakya(Great Saying) of our Scriptures Upanishats, i.e. That thou art(That you are!)  in two different ways. Thus:
    .
    1. Bhavani! Tat Twam Asi : Shridevi, That thou art! By addressing as you, we acknowledge Shridevi as the Ultimate Reality(Universal Self) with all powers of supreme deities of Lord Vishnu and others. We express our wish to merge with her.
      .
    2. Tat (Bhavani!) Twam Asi : That Thou Art! Here are we addressing our own Individual Self to remind ourselves to realize us the Universal Self by praying Shridevi via path of devotion. Remember, Shridevi herself is the Universal Self( a.k.a the Ultimate Reality).
      .
  2. The words dase(to the servant) and vanchhan(desired to, intending to) provide inputs to the secret strategy to please Shridevi ! It is very simple: surrendering to Shridevi completely like a servant, with 100% devotion(intention or bhava).
    .
It also suggests that we do not need to spell out what we want fully. But, we need to be very clear in our intention. That’s all!  Shridevi understands the intent very easily and grants us whatever we want instantaneously.
    .
  3. The word nija means two things: one’s own  and the Truth. So, here the phrase nija-sayujya means Shridevi’s own abode which itself is the eternal Truth. Thus, it further means that Shridevi herself is nothing but the Ultimate Truth.
    .
  4. Look at the play of two words Bhavani Tvam! It means Bhavani(Shridevi), You! If you combine the two into a single word: Bhavanitvam, it means being one and identical with Shridevi.
    .
Interestingly, the words Tadaiva Tvam also have a hidden daivatvam(Oneness with the Divinity), when taken together. This means that Shridevi can make the devotee identical with God, i.e. the realization of God within oneself. It also suggests we can get the divine powers of God by the Grace of Shridevi.
    .
To understand the concept of these words more clearly, compare similar words like Shivatvam(being one with Lord Shiva), Panchatvam(being one with five elements, i.e. death) and so on. Again, if we divide the word Shivatvam as Shiva Tvam it means Lord Shiva, You! What a marvel of Sanskrit words!
    .
  5. From the above perspective #4, the first line of the verse thus can become Dase mayi Bhavanitvam, sakarunam drishtim (cha) vitara. It means Shridevi, to me who is your servant, provide your eternal abode and kind look of Grace!
    .
Consider the devotee who sought liberation(moksha) addressed Shridevi as Bhavani tvam( Bhavani, you!).  Shridevi  quickly understood the intention of  her devotee that he  is asking for Bhavanitvam(state of being one with Shridevi). So, She granted him her eternal abode immediately!
    .
Now, if the house-holder is asking for material luxuries and enjoyment(bhoga), the moment the devotee says Bhavani, tvam!(Shridevi, you!), she confers the wealthy, powerful and royal status in the society to the devotee, just by her kind look!
    .
How do we get this esoteric meaning? The word padaveem also means status or the prestige. In this context, Shridevi grants the wealthy status which is better than that of Lord Vishnu (the ruler of wealth) and  more royal than that of Lord Indra, who is the king of the heaven.
    .
Thus, true to her name Shridevi, she bestows both bhoga(material enjoyment) and moksha(liberation) to her staunch devotees.
    .
  6. The verse further shows the caring motherly affection of Shridevi. It describes a familiar situation: when the baby cries,  its Mother exactly knows what that baby really needs. The kid need not spell-out anything at all!
    .
  7. In this context, the word padam means both the abode and lotus feet of Shridevi.  The last line of the verse, viz., Mukunda...padam, means that Shridevi’s feet is nothing but the eternal abode of Shridevi, which is prayed by bowing crowns(heads) of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Indra.
    .
It has already been said in the first shloka of Soundarya Lahari that Great powers such as Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma also worship Shridevi  as: “…atastvam aradhyam Hari-Hara- Virinchyadi-bhirapi…”. So, the phrase Mukunda…padam, extols and reiterates the supreme power of Shridevi over all other deities..

Words of Beauty: Bunch of sweet words that contribute melody and rhythm to the verse: vitara, sakaru-nam; iti, katha-yati, iti-yah; ta-daiva, ta-samyai; ni-ja, sayu-jya; Muku-nda, Brahme-ndra;sphu-ta, muku-ta. Relish and enjoy!

The Action Point: Let us pray Shridevi with full devotion to earn her kind Grace!

Shridevi and Hinrinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva(Credit: Lightgrid)

The Divine Mother Shridevi with Hindu Trinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Trayanam devanam tri-guna-janitanam tava Shive

Tatha hi tvat-pado’dvahana-mani-pitasya nikate

Benefits: To getting higher posts and power.

Meaning:
O Shridevi Parvati! Three Devas(Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva) who are born by your three qualities,
get worshiped when we worship your lotus feet.
Because, near the jeweled seat where you place you lotus feet,
they always stand with folded hands on their crowns(saluting you)!

Insights:

  1.   The three Devas are the extremely powerful Hindu Trinity viz. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, who are in-charge of creation, sustenance and dissolution respectively.
    .
In this verse, it is mentioned that three deities are originated from the three qualities Rajas(dynamism), Satva(balanced) and Tamas(inertia)  of Shridevi Parvati.  In fact, these three qualities(gunas) of Shridevi are required to these three deities to perform their respective functions.
    .
  2. Esoteric Meaning #1: It is mentioned that the three deities of Hindu Trinity are always near the lotus feet of Shridevi. They pray Her with their hands folded on their crowns to salute Her.
    .
So, by worshiping Shridevi’s lotus feet, we automatically worship the Hindu Trinity! So, no need to pray Hindu Trinity separately; it is enough to worship Shridevi’s lotus feet to get the Grace of these three powerful deities. All included! Is it not a nice package?  :)
    .
Remember, this is the greatness and power of Shridevi’s lotus feet only. Now, imagine the power of Shridevi Herself. It is infinite and immeasurable!
    .
  3. Esoteric Meaning #2: As discussed above, Shridevi commands over Hindu Trinity who take care of creation, sustenance and dissolution. So, it means that Shridevi Herself is the Supreme Power who is ultimately responsible for these divine activities.
    .
  4. Esoteric Meaning #3: This verse suggests that Shridevi is nothing but the Universal Self(Supreme Brahman) that controls everything. The deities are different powers of that one primordial power referred as Adi Shakti. Shridevi is the name for that Supreme Power.

Words of Beauty: Here is a bunch of melodious words that offer a nice rhythm to the verse: traya-nam, deva-nam, janita-nam; puja, puja; pi-ta-sya, nika-te. Relish and enjoy!

Action Point: Let us pray the lotus feet of Shridevi for her kind Grace.

The Divine Couple, Always Together: Lord Shiva and Shridevi Parvati

Virincih panchatvam vrajati harir aapnoti virathim

Vitandri mahendri vithathir api sammeelitha-drsa

- Soundarya Lahari 26

Benefits: Destruction of enemies.

Meaning: O Shridevi, the Queen of chastity! Lord Brahma goes back to five elements!
Lord Vishnu ceases to exist!
Lord Yama meets death! Lord Kubera passes away!
Ever wakeful eyes of Lord Indra close forever!
During the complete dissolution, only your Lord(Shiva) moves around.

Insights:

  1. Poetically, it is a very beautiful verse indeed[1]. Look at the literal contrasts here! Lord Brahma who creates five elements goes back to them, i.e. he dies. Lord Vishnu who supports existence of all creation, himself ceases to exist! Lord Yama who is the lord of death, himself meets death!
    .
Moreover, Lord Kubera who is the ruler and giver of wealth, loses the greatest wealth, i.e. his life! Lord Indra whose eyes are always open,[2] closes his eyes eternally, i.e. he dies. Only Shridevi’s Lord, Shiva survives in the great dissolution, since Shridevi is strongly devoted to Him..
    .
  2. In this shloka, Shridevi is addressed as ‘Sati ‘ meaning devoted wife of Lord Shiva. Because of strong devotion of Shridevi to Her Lord, only Lord Shiva survives during the great dissolution. This is the greatness  and power of Shridevi Parvati.
    .
  3. The purport is that Lord Shiva is eternal because of the power of Shridevi’s devotion toward him. Remember, Gods and demigods are different personified powers of the Ultimate Reality(a.k.a Sadashiva, Brahman). As we know, during the dissolution, all Gods and demigods  like Indra, Yama and others are withdrawn into eternal Sadashiva(also known as Parameshwara, Supreme Lord, Brahman etc.).
    .
  4. Esoteric Meaning #1: The word dissolution does not really mean destruction; it means the withdrawal of  forces such as Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu etc. back to one eternal Reality called Sadashiva or Universal self. It is the part of the natural process of the universe. Logically thinking, since Lord Shiva is the in-charge of complete dissolution, He alone remains after that! Since He is the Universal Self, He exists eternally.
    .
  5. Esoteric Meaning #2: The word Pati means the Pashupati, i.e. the Lord(the Universal Self) of all Individual Selves(Pashus). This is why Lord Shiva is also addressed by another name Pashu-pati. Since Lord Shiva alone remains after the dissolution, he is the Ultimate Reality.  This verse reminds us of single most important purpose of our lives, i.e.  to merge with the Universal Self via traditional yoga.
    .
  6. Secret Meaning #1: According to the verse, after complete dissolution, only Lord Shiva(Pati, the Lord) and Shridevi(Sati,  devoted wife of Lord Shiva, i.e. Shri Parvati) remain, because they are the Ultimate Reality. All other deities are their different powers and hence they are withdrawn back during the dissolution.
    .
The use of words wife(Sati) and husband(Pati) and the oneness of Lord Shiva and Shridevi Parvati set the highest standard for all the married couples on how to be together in perfect harmony. This message is especially important in our modern era where the marital bonds are getting loosened very easily since people view the marriage more as socio-legal contract than as a divine relationship of oneness.
    .
  7. Secret Meaning #2: The two words mentioned in the verse, Sati(Wife) and Pati (Husband) imply the eternal couple and parents of the world, Shridevi Parvati and Lord Shiva who are united like word and its meaning(Vagartha).

Notes:

  1. Words of Beauty: Feel the rhythm, tone and melody of almost rhyming words used here! e.g. Virinchi-pancha, harir-virati, vinasham-keenasho, dhanado-nidhanam, vitandri-mahendri, Sati-twatpati.  We have seen this internal rhyming of homo-phonic words in many other shlokas of Soundarya Lahari as well. True to its name, this is the real beauty of Wave of Beauty(i.e. Soundarya Lahari). Just amazing and marvelous! Relish and enjoy!
    .
  2. According to Scriptures, unlike human beings Gods and demigods do not blink. So, their eyes are always open. Other characteristics of divine beings is Gods do not sweat, have a natural hallow or glow, their feet do not touch the ground and so on.

Benefits: Realization of the Self, the Ultimate Truth.

Meaning: Shridevi! May my:
- prattle be your prayer,
- forms of my body in my manual work be holy gestures(mudras) of your worship,
- loitering be clock-wise revolution(pradakshina) around you,
- eating be offering of holy oblations in your worship,
- lying down be prostrations to thee,
- attending to all other comforts be a dedication of my entire Self to thee.
(Finally,) May all the actions of mine be your worship!

Insights: Splendid! Superb!! (You may add your adjectives here!)

  1. .Worship of deities to connect to the Universal Self is of two kinds: external and internal.
External worship involves praying the Universal Self with attributes, i.e.  in the form of idol of deities such as Lord Ganesh, Shridevi, Lord Vishnu and others. External items like flowers, fruits,  and others are used for this kind of worship. It also involves prayers, gestures(mudras), pradakshina, oblations and prostrations as defined by the tradition.
    .
In the internal worship, we meditate on the attribute-less Universal Self(a.k.a Brahaman) which is infinite, eternal, omnipresent and omnipotent power. We use our own body, mind and actions as means to connect to the Absolute. So, in this shloka, this highest form of internal worship of the Ultimate Reality Shridevi is described very elegantly.
    .
  2. According to this verse, all our natural everyday actions should be offered to Shridevi with feeling and devotion as though we are performing prayers, gestures etc. of the external worship.  In other words, we need to feel with devotion that: our talking as a prayer, many body poses we assume in the whole day as gestures, moving around as pradakshina and so on. What a great way to pray and surrender to Shridevi!
    .
  3. Esoteric Meaning: The message of this shloka is crystal clear: we need to pray Shridevi by surrendering ourselves to Her. We need to not only submit ourselves to Her, but all our actions too!  This shloka upholds the purport of desire-less Karma Yoga and the command of Lord Shrikrishna in Bhagavadgita:
    .
Swakarmana tam abhyarchya siddhim vindati manavah | – Gita 18.46
Means: Human beings achieve their liberation by worshiping That(Universal Self) by their actions.
    .
In this shloka, we worship Shridevi who is same as the Universal Self, by surrendering ourselves and all our actions. This is the highest form of worship one can do.
    .
  4. Words of Beauty: Here are the group of words that provide a nice rhythm, melody and tone: Japoja-lpa,shi-lpa; su-kham,a-khilam; sa-parya, parya-ya; st-ava, bh-avatu. Relish and enjoy!

Benefits: To get rid of fear of poison and untimely death.

Meaning: O Mother! (Shridevi)! Even after drinking the nectar that eliminates old age and death,
the celestial beings such as Lord Brahma, Lord Indra perish in the universe[1].
The time period of existence of Lord Shiva, who consumed strong virulent poison, is beyond computation[2].
The root of that(wonder!) is your ear-ornaments. [3]

Insights: What a great power of Shridevi’s chastity(paativratya) and devotion to Lord Shiva!

  1. According to our Scriptures, once Gods and daemons got together and churned the ocean of milk. Among other divine things, a strong poison called Halaahala(a.k.a Kaalakoota) came out as as fume and started choking the entire world. Everybody started praying Lord Shiva. Out of great kindness and compassion, he drank the entire poison. Shridevi Parvati rushed there and held the neck of the Lord and stopped the poison going to the stomach.
    .
The churning was resumed and continued until the divine nectar, that eliminates old age and death,  came out. When the fight ensued between Gods and daemons while sharing the nectar, Lord Vishnu appeared as beautiful lady called Mohini(means mesmerizing lady) and ensured that only Gods could consume the nectar.  Due to this, Gods conquered old-age and death, until the next dissolution. After dissolution only Lord Shiva remains as Sadashiva(eternal Brahman) after annihilating everything else to himself.
    .
  2. Lord Shiva did not consume nectar to become immortal. Instead, to help the world, he consumed poison which could have potentially harmed him. According to this shloka, Lord Shiva is eternal even after consuming the poison, because of Shridevi’s ear ornaments, i.e. devotion of Shridevi Parvati. This shloka extols the chastity(paativratya) of Shridevi and sets the highest standard for all of us to follow.
    .
  3. In India, married ladies wear ornaments on their ears as a mark of respect and devotion to their husbands. Generally, ornaments and decorative items are worn as a symbol of being sumangali, i.e. who is married and the husband is alive. Our Scriptures have discussed the power of devotion of wife towards her husband at length in many stories.
    .
For example, Damayanti was a devoted wife of the king Nala. When they were roaming in the forest, Nala left Damayanti alone due some unfortunate circumstance.
    .
A hunter was attracted towards Damayanti and approached her with evil intentions. Then, to protect herself,  Damayanti just gave him an angry look. That’s it! The hunter was reduced ashes!
    .
This is the power of chastity(paativratya) of Damayanti towards her husband. The current shloka talks about this power of devotion of a married lady towards her spouse by taking the great example of of Shridevi and Lord Shiva.
    .
  4. Esoteric Meaning#1 : Gods are mortal even after consuming nectar. But, Lord Shiva is eternal by drinking the deadly poison Halahala. Look at the sheer contrast here!
    .
The nectar turns poison(in the long run) for temporary deities and the poison turns nectar to Lord Shiva to make him eternal! According to this verse the secret root cause of this wonder is Shridevi’s power of chastity(paativratya) and devotion to Lord Shiva.
    .
  5. Esoteric Meaning #2: Focus on the word tatanka-mahima, meaning the power of ear ornaments of Shridevi. Think about it. If the ear ornaments have the power to ensure the Lord Shiva to be eternal, what could be the power of Shridevi herself? It is infinite and immeasurable. After all, Shridevi is synonymous with power. So, She is also called Shakti(power). This verse extols this nature of Shridevi.
    .
  6. Esoteric Meaning #3: The word vipadyante(meaning killed) in the verse clearly says that other gods are mortal since they are subjected to life cycle of the universe. The Lord Shiva  and Shridevi together are nothing but the eternal Ultimate Reality(Universal Self).
    ..
  7. Words of Beauty: Here are the group of words that provide melodious rhythm to the verse: Sudha-asvadya; jara-harinim; Vidhi-divishadh; karalam-ksvelam; kaala-kalana. Relish and Enjoy!
